Korean Astrology 101

What is Saju?

The ancient Korean art of reading destiny through your birth date β€” and why it tells you so much about your favorite K-pop idols.

A 3,000-Year-Old System

Saju (사주, ε››ζŸ±) has been practiced in Korea for over a millennium. Kings consulted it before major decisions. Families used it to find compatible marriage partners. Today, millions of Koreans still check their saju before career moves, relationships, and big life choices.

We're bringing this rich tradition to K-pop fans worldwide β€” because understanding your idol's energy is a whole new way to connect with them.

How Saju Works

πŸ“…
STEP 01

Your birth = your blueprint

In Korean astrology, your exact birth date isn't just trivia β€” it's a map of your energy. The year, month, and day you were born each carry a specific cosmic force.

πŸ›οΈ
STEP 02

Four Pillars, Eight Characters

"Saju" literally means Four Pillars (ε››ζŸ±). Each pillar has two characters β€” one from Heaven (μ²œκ°„) and one from Earth (지지). Together, all eight reveal your full energy blueprint.

⚑
STEP 03

The Five Elements

Every character belongs to one of five elements: Wood 🌿, Fire πŸ”₯, Earth 🌍, Metal πŸ’Ž, or Water 🌊. These elements interact β€” some energize each other, some challenge each other.

πŸ’«
STEP 04

Your Day Pillar = Your True Self

Out of the four pillars, the Day Pillar is the most important β€” it represents your core identity. The element of your Day Pillar is what we call your Soul Element.

πŸ’•
STEP 05

Compatibility = element chemistry

When two Soul Elements meet, the interaction tells the story of the relationship. Wood feeds Fire β€” natural soulmates. Metal cuts Wood β€” intense, challenging, magnetic.

⚠️

Just use your regular birthday

Use the birthday on your ID, passport, or birth certificate. That's it. No conversions needed for most people.

Note for Korean users: Saju uses the solar calendar (μ–‘λ ₯) based on solar terms (절기), not the lunar calendar (음λ ₯). The year changes at μž…μΆ˜ (η«‹ζ˜₯, ~February 4th), not at Lunar New Year. If you were born in January or early February, your Saju year pillar may differ from what you expect.

❌ Wrong approach

Using Lunar New Year as the year boundary. Results in incorrect year pillar for people born in January–February.

βœ… Starborn approach

Using μž…μΆ˜ (Feb 4) as the year boundary. If born before Feb 4th, your Year Pillar belongs to the previous year.

πŸ’‘ Example

Born February 2nd, 2000 β†’ Year Pillar = 1999 (기묘, Earth Rabbit), not 2000
Born February 6th, 2000 β†’ Year Pillar = 2000 (경진, Metal Dragon)βœ…

Always enter your Gregorian (solar) birthday β€” the date on your ID or passport. Never use your lunar birthday.

FAQ

Is Saju the same as Chinese astrology?↓
They share the same ancient roots β€” the system originated in China and was refined over millennia. Korea developed its own tradition called μžν‰λͺ…리 (Ja-pyeong Myungri), which is the system we use. Think of it like how Western astrology evolved differently across cultures.
How is Saju different from zodiac signs?↓
Western astrology uses just your birth month to assign a star sign. Saju uses your full birth date, creating a unique combination of 60 possible year types Γ— 12 month types Γ— 60 day types β€” that's over 43,000 combinations, compared to just 12 zodiac signs.
Why don't you need birth time?↓
The fourth pillar (time) requires the exact birth hour. Since most idol birth times aren't public, we calculate based on three pillars β€” which still gives a rich and accurate reading. Many traditional saju readings work the same way.
Is this scientifically accurate?↓
Saju is a traditional art, not science β€” just like Western astrology. But it's a framework thousands of years in the making, refined by countless practitioners. We use it as a fun, meaningful lens for self-reflection and exploring K-pop connections. Take it seriously, but lightly. 😊
Why do different saju sites give different results?↓
Great question. Saju has multiple schools of interpretation, and there are subtleties in how the lunar calendar transitions (called 절기, or solar terms) are applied. We use the μžν‰λͺ…리 school with strict solar-term calculations β€” the most widely respected traditional system.
What birthday should I enter?↓
The birthday on your ID, passport, or birth certificate β€” your regular Gregorian calendar birthday. That's it. No conversion needed. Most people outside East Asia use this calendar by default and never need to think about it.
I know my Korean lunar birthday (음λ ₯). Should I use that?↓
No β€” use your solar (Gregorian) calendar birthday instead. Authentic Saju uses the solar calendar adjusted by 24 solar terms (절기), not the lunar calendar. The year changes at μž…μΆ˜ (η«‹ζ˜₯, around February 4th) rather than Lunar New Year. If you enter your lunar birthday, your reading will be inaccurate. When in doubt: use the date on your passport.
